New York and New Jersey are among the worst states in the country for lead pipes

Millions of service lines nationally are still recorded as unknown material. Unknown is not the same as safe.

Be aware of outlet differences

Different fixtures in the same property can produce different results depending on plumbing and use patterns.

Plumbing can change the result

Service lines, interior pipes, solder, valves and fixtures can all influence water after it enters a property.

Test the concern directly

Laboratory analysis can be selected for lead, bacteria, metals, PFAS and other parameters based on what you want to know.

Tap water testing

Four ways to answer a question about your tap, and what each one actually tells you

OptionWhat it answersWhat it leaves open
Switching to bottledAvoids the tap for drinkingWhat is at the tap, and everything else the tap is used for
Installing a filterAddresses whatever it is rated to addressWhether that was the issue, and whether it is still working
Home test stripA rough reading on a few basic parametersAnything at low concentration, and anything not on the strip
Utility annual reportHow the system performed to the compliance pointEverything inside the property
Laboratory sampleMeasured values at a stated point under stated conditionsHow that changes on a different day or fixture

Professional Tap Water Testing for Households

Households form an impression of their water from taste, odor and appearance. Those senses are a reasonable guide to sediment, iron and chlorine, and they detect nothing at all where lead and PFAS are concerned.

Olympian Water Testing conducts professional tap water testing for households, renters, families and buyers across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

What Testing Establishes That Observation Cannot

Lead and PFAS produce no color, taste or odor at any concentration. Professional sampling and analysis is the only way to establish whether they are present at a given tap.

Lead bearing components remain in current installations, including brass faucet bodies, angle stops, mixing valves, hose bibbs and pipe fittings, and fixtures manufactured to the lead free standard return measurable lead with regularity. Homes of every age warrant assessment.

How Parameter Selection Works

Parameter selection is determined through an in depth consultation with one of our consultants, frequently conducted in writing, covering the property, its plumbing history and what prompted the enquiry.

Most household selections begin with lead and copper at the taps used for drinking and cooking, extending to bacteriological indicators, PFAS, chemical parameters or a full potability selection where the property supports it.

Understanding Our Reporting

Our reporting identifies each sampling point, the analytical method, the reporting limit and the measured value for every parameter selected.

Each value is set against the applicable published reference with the category of that reference identified, so the figures can be interpreted correctly by the client and by anyone they share them with.

Common questions

How can I be more aware of what is coming from my tap?
Know your water source, review any available utility information, pay attention to changes in the property, and use laboratory testing when you need answers about specific contaminants at your own outlets.
What changes in tap water should prompt testing?
Persistent discoloration, unusual odor or taste, sediment, plumbing work, prolonged vacancy, known environmental concerns or questions about lead and other invisible contaminants can all justify targeted testing.
Can a filter hide a water-quality problem?
A filter can change water quality, but it does not explain the untreated condition. When evaluating a concern or treatment performance, sampling before and after treatment can provide useful comparative data.
Should I test hot water or cold water?
That depends on the question. Drinking-water exposure assessments generally focus on the water people consume, while some building-system investigations may require other temperatures or locations.

Request Tap Water Testing

Tell Olympian what you want to understand about the water at your tap and the sampling plan can be built around that question.
